Smith Island Art League History

2008

Smith Island Art League Inc. is a non-profit organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service Code.

In June of 1993, seven artists residing on the island met to discuss the formation of an art club on Bald Head Island to share their common interests.  Malcolm Fleming, a wild life artist and island resident, now deceased, was a driving force.

The group decided on a format of four meetings a year with one of the meetings being dedicated to an art program, such as a lecture which would be open to the public.  Since then such distinguished people as Dr. David Steele, Curator of the North Carolina Museum of Art and Mr. Joe Miller, noted artist and owner of Cheap Joes Art Supply in Boone, NC have provided programs.  Presently the organization has pared the meetings down to two a year taking place during the shows and at least two online meetings.

The League also decided to have one art show on Bald Head Island each year to provide an outlet for the sale of members’ work.  Memorial Day weekend was selected for that annual event.  The event was held outdoors until 2003 when the new Association Center was completed.  The shows have been held inside the center since then.

Today the group is composed of 28 artists who either reside on the island, own property or work full time on the island.  The Smith Island Art League presents a Memorial Day weekend show and since 2000 has added a Thanksgiving weekend show each year.  A portion of the proceeds from the Thanksgiving Show benefits other nonprofit organizations on the island.
